The Theatrical Program: Our original program pairs inner-city teenagers with adult mentors. Over the course of six months, the mentor team examines such issues as drug abuse, racism, and violence. They then begin to create an original short play or film based on how these issues affect their lives. When the scripts are finished, professional writers and directors offer their expertise, helping each teen and mentor bring his/her shared vision to the stage or screen. As a result of this process, they are able to impact others with their stories and share their vision of what is possible in our community. Voices of the Classroom: This classroom-based program was launched in 2003 at Los Angeles High School. It works with sophomores to help them develop critical thinking and leadership skills, and to identify the unique impact they want to make in the community. It is currently in its second year at Los Angeles High School, and has expanded to Hollywood High School as well. The Film Program: This program uses the medium of film to document the powerful stories of our teens, while raising awareness around key social issues. "Listen," produced through a collaboration with The Fulfillment Fund in 2001, focused on drug and alcohol awareness, and was distributed to its teenaged audience through the Los Angeles Unified School District. Our latest project, "Staging Hope," produced in collaboration with two international Non-Governmental Organizations, International Rescue Committee (IRC) and the International Medical Corps. (IMC), tells the story of of a cross-cultural collaboration between Ugandan teenagers and Los Angeles based creative professionals. The film includes personal accounts, live performances, music and theater. It documents the making of two one-act plays, written and performed by Northern Ugandan teenagers in Northern Uganda with the help of our creative team. "Staging Hope" was the official selection at the 2011 Politics on Film festival in Washington DC, and the winner of the audience award from both the Philadelphia Film Festival and the Starz Denver Film Festival.
